The finishing process at Miles is a critical component of fiberglass manufacturing that determines the final appearance, functionality, and durability of composite product. To ensure that composite products meet the specific requirements of various applications or end-use, a variety of finishing processes are employed. 

One of the most common finishing processes involves the use of gelcoat, which is a modified resin applied to molds. Gelcoats are available in different types, with the most common being based on epoxy or unsaturated polyester resin chemistry. After application, the gelcoat is cured to form and backed with composite polymer matrices. These matrices typically consist of mixtures of polyester resin and fiberglass or epoxy resin with glass. 

Once the manufactured component is cured and removed from the mold, the gelcoated surface is visible. The surface is usually colored to provide an attractive, glossy appearance, which enhances the aesthetic appeal of the finished product. Gelcoats can be pigmented in various colors and are designed to be durable, providing resistance to UV light, hydrolysis, graffiti, and microbial development. 

Another finishing process used in fiberglass manufacturing is sanding. Sanding is typically used to smooth out rough surfaces, eliminate imperfections, and prepare the surface for additional coatings or paints. Sanding is also used to improve the adhesion of the gelcoat or any subsequent coatings applied to the surface. 

In addition to gelcoats and sanding, other finishing processes such as polishing, buffing, and painting may also be employed. Polishing and buffing are used to enhance the surface finish of fiberglass product, while painting may be used to achieve a specific color or to provide additional protection against environmental factors.
