Emergency Relief Shelters
Miles Fiberglass and Composites Inc. has been selected by Intershelter Inc. as the supplier of choice to manufacture and ship portable, stackable, and rigid Emergency Relief Shelters (ERS). These state of the art emergency relief shelters are being produced to help those who have been greatly affected by the natural disasters Mother Nature often brings. The ERS are unique in their capabilities in the sense that they can be constructed by unskilled laborers in less than a three hour time frame and will provide 320 sq. ft. of living space; the equivalent of a 3 bedroom or studio apartment. FEMA is currently considering these shelters for disaster areas such as the recent tsunami in Samoa.
The portability of the ERS is unique, being shipped in a 4X4X8 container. With this consideration, you can ship 32 ERS’ covering 10,000 sq. ft. of secure and protected living space on just one C-130 Hercules Aircraft! With a flight of 6 C-130’s, flying at a time rate of 1 hour, or 200 miles, shelters can be provided to 768 people with medium term housing every other hour, which is equal to 9,200 people being provided shelter every day!
With the classic spherical design and strength, the ERS’ are strong, reliable, and stable enough to withstand a Class 4 Hurricane, or an 8.5 rated Earthquake. The ERS’ has been utilized as a temporary step to perpetual habitation. Strength is not the only prosperity; each piece weighs less than 70 pounds and is easily and harmlessly transported by hand across uneven ground.
This new design is constructed with the latest composite technology from the aerospace industry into a unit using 25% less weight with an increased strength and durability, making it the most unique ERS composites has to offer! Through our recommend ability manufacturing operation, we are able to reduce the relief shelter weight from 1,500 pounds to less than 1,200 pounds! In addition to the decrement in weight, the relief shelter is made with structural fiberglass with fire resistant resins. The fire rating of the relief shelters exceeds the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements for flying by using these new materials, furthermore offering protection that far exceeds tents or wooden temporary structures. This structure is exceedingly reliable for the extreme conditions Mother Nature can throw our way.
